How do you know he arrived before 1839? A child born? One way to
narrow the date of arrival is with the census, it may or may not be
right on but it gives a range to search in. Where did he settle when
he came?

There are only 13 John Reeds (but he might have use only initials)
arriving between 1838 and 1858 and a couple are Irish <G> otherwise it
is hard to tell which might be he without a family with him.
