[TSL] fares, sailing ship vs. steamer
" Judy Weber" <jweber@centurylink.net> on 09/07/2013

My ancestor arrived in New York harbor 5 June, 1867, from Bremen. His mode
of transportation was the sailing ship E.F. Gabain. Also arriving in the
port of New York on that day were at least 4 vessels that were referred to
as steamers or a steamship. I am wondering if it was cheaper to travel in a
wind powered vessel than a steam powered vessel at that time. There would
have been a travel time element involved I would think, steamer making the
ocean voyage quicker than a sailing vessel.
