[TSL] Appeal for help re Great Grandfather
John Gibb via <theshipslist@rootsweb.com> on 09/29/2014

This is a long shot, but nothing ventured nothing gained! Please excuse my
French as I am not a French speaker. I have been trying to find members of
my great grandfather’s family. All the information I have on him comes from
his Scottish marriage, death and census records.
Marriage certificate (1882) states: name Gustave Julien Birdwisa, age 36
years. Father Victor Julien Birdwisa, seaman merchant service, deceased.
Mother Mary Louisa Birdwisa maiden name Delony.

Death certificate (1915) states: age 60 years; father Victor Julien
Birdwisa, coachman, deceased. Mother Louisa Russell previously Birdwisa
maiden surname Delony.

1901 census: Julian Agustus Birdwise; age 50 years, mate, born France.
1911 census: Agustus J. Birdwisa; age 66 years, sailor merchant service,
born Normandy, nationality French.

To further complicate matters I have one of his seaman’s log books, it gives
his date of birth as 1850 in Toronto. On the LDS site he is listed as being
born in France on 12th November 1844, none of the family know where this
information comes from.

Gustave could not read or write, so the spellings for the names will be
phonetic (Scottish). The family oral tradition was that he was from Bordeaux
and it was only when the 1911 census was released a few months ago that we
noticed Normandy, although I believe that there are some old place names in
Normandy called Bordeaux?
Could it be his mothers name is Delaunay which I believe is a common name in
France? Also her second marriage could be Roussell or Rousel etc?
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated, pass forward to anyone
you think may be of help.
