Several Toronto Globe and Mail items on this. May 22, 1923 headline

Liner Strikes Rock And Is Run Ashore To Prevent Sinking

Says 436 passengers on board at the time. On May 23 headline reads
Starving Villagers Give Last of Store To Wreck Survivors

A relief ship was sent out with stores to aid the people and the story
was told by Capt Lewis. On May 28 the paper reported:

Marvale Passengers Continue Their Voyage
St John's, Nfld, May 27.--The passengers and crew of the Canadian
Pacific liner Marvale, which sank last Monday afternoon striking Cape
Frcols Rocks, off the southern coast of Nefoundland, (sic) were picked
up here yesterday by the liner Melita of the Canadian Pacific Line,
and continued their voyage to England.

On June 6, the paper reported that they were trying to salvage the
mails from the wreck "which lies in shallow water near St Shotts, on
the south coast of Newfoundland, is steadily breaking up. Attempts to
salvage mails, express matter and passengers' effects have been
practically abandoned."

On Aug 17, 1923

Marvale Captain Guilty of "Error of Judgement"
London, Aug 16.--The Court of Inquiry into the loss of the Canadian
Pacific steamship Marvale off Newfoundland on May 21 last has found
the casualty and loss of the vessel to have been due to a "grave error
of judgment" on the part of the Captain, through being overconfident
in the position of his vessel. No censure, however, is passed on the
Captain.

If you want copies of the items let me know.

Regards..
