I decided I had better send one of these messages TO the list rather than
privately.  "Unsubscribe" sent to the "list address" seems to be catching,
like the measles, and when we see one or two, it is usually followed by
several others.

I'm sorry, but it does no good mailing UNSUBSCRIBE to other listmembers.
They cannot help you.  To unsubscribe, you do exactly as you did to
subscribe, you talk to the auto-ROBOTS, by using one of the "request"
addresses.
You are in complete control of your own subscribe and unsubscribe, the
auto-robots have nothing else to do, so will process your "request"
immediately.   :-}

As you will recall from reading your Welcome Message, the ONLY way to get
ON or OFF any mailing list is to talk to one the auto-ROBOTS running the
list.
These machines are not different than a bank ATM machine, or a telephone
system where you "press 1" to continue.  You _must_ talk to one of the
ROBOTIC addresses [ie. "request" address] and NOT to the list address, as
that is
ONLY for posting queries or responding to other member's messages.

To assure success, in your email, you just have to say the single "Command
word" to
the ROBOT.  That word is UNSUBSCRIBE.  As you will be talking to a machine
and not a person, there is no need to be polite, or to offer an
explanation, as extra text can sometimes confuse them and they decide to
tell you they can't find you one the list.  ALWAYS remember to use a *new*
message as any message with "Re:" in the Subject Line will also be
unprocessed.

This part is not directed to you Vicki, but some people do try, and fail to
get off the list by sending the following words:

UNSCIBE
OFF
UNSRIBE
UNSUBRIBE
NO MAIL
UNSCRIB
UNSUSCIBE
REMOVE
TAKE ME OFF!
*(#!@**&%$

None of these will work.  To get off the list, just follow these 5 steps:

1.  Open a NEW message (do NOT simply "reply" to this message, as Re: in the
subject line causes your message to be ignored by the robot)
2.  In the "Address" box, type ... or copy/paste
            for DIGEST Mode members  TheShipsList-D-request@rootsweb.com
            for LIST Mode members    TheShipsList-L-request@rootsweb.com
3.  In the "Subject" box, do not type anything at all.
4.  In the "Message" box, type (without typos) only the word UNSUBSCRIBE
5.  Hit "Send"

ps. Write in PLAIN TEXT only, as the ROBOTS do not accept HTML messages.
Expect to receive a few messages after a successful unsubscribe [ie. after
you receive your "you have been removed" message], as the mail which
was queued will still be delivered to you.

Thank you
