Hi Christine .......... (Hi Marg),

I've been following this thread and I am convinced that Gertrude did not
sail. The tally of passengers on that page was "41" and there were 43
names. Not sure what the red line meant in particular ... maybe she
cancelled earlier than Gertrude. The 'MB' is simply the initials of
the person who drew the line, possibly someone from the Pursers
office. Maybe John A. Evans popped the question when he realised she
really was intending to emigrate to New Zealand. :-)

I do believe this was him in the 1911 census

Name: John A Evans
Age in 1911: 21
Estimated birth year: abt 1890
Relation to Head: Policeman
Gender: Male
Birth Place: Pontesbury, Salop, England
Civil Parish: Swinton

County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England
Street address: Police Station Manchester Road Swinton Manchester
Marital Status: Single
Occupation: Volice Constable
Registration district: Barton upon Irwell
Registration District Number: 463
Sub-registration district: Worsley
ED, institution, or vessel: 17
Piece: 23576

Salop is short form for Shropshire. The 1901 census suggests John E.
Evans, so maybe the census taker misheard ?? Anyway, I hope this helps a
