[TSL] Jalawar - Liverpool to Cape Town - 1859
"Leeanne Blunden" <> on 03/10/2013

Hi All,

I am looking for more information (pictures, logs etc) on the ship Jalawar.

I have found the following on The Ships List website:

The Jalawar was built in 1850 and was in service until 1878 when she
foundered off the Coast of Java. She was owned by Moore & Co, Liverpool at
the time Maunsell and family sailed on her but was purchased by Cayzer,
Irvine & Company in 1876.

And from a book by Esme Bull I know that my ancestors immigrated from
Ireland to South Africa in 1859:

Mansell BLUNDEN (43), a farmer from Tipperary in Ireland, sailed on the
Jalawar, dep Liverpool 2 October 1859 arr Table Bay 16 December. With him
was Margaret (44), Rebecca (21) milliner, Bessie (19) milliner, Tudor L (16)
shopman and Isabella (14).

Google searches for the ship mostly bring up hits for the place Jalawar in
India, which is obviously not helpful or relevant.

I would like to find out more about the conditions on the ship and would
love to know what she looked like. Does anyone have any idea's of where I
might search to find this info?

Thank you,
