John

You do not say when in 1857 and this would help in a search of the
London Times. I did find this item:

April 16, 1858:

London, April 15.--Wind at noon, S.W., light breeze, and fine. A
small bundle of papers one of which dated Jan 30, 1857, is addressed
to the chief mate of the Matoaka, and is a kind of certificate,
signed by George Anderson, surgeon-superintendant, has been picked up
on the Salterton beach, near Exmouth. The Matoaka sailed from the
Downs March 20, for Port Phillip.

If you can give me a date or approximate date I can dig a little more.

Regards..

Marj
