[TSL] Trace "Cygnet" wrecked near Conception Isl 20th July 1841

May I ask for help /advice please.



This concerns my GGf Jas Wm Humphreys / Umphrey. He said during a newspaper interview, that was published in South Australia in 1910, that he was onboard "Cygnet " that ran on a reef near Conception Island, and stranded there until taken to St. Thomas. He said they were on their way from Nassau N.P. to Turk's Island and engaged in survey work for coal depot sites.

In confirmation of what he said from Caledonian Mercury 28th July 1841     " Nassau N.P. The Cygnet ( mail boat ),hence to Turk's Island, was totally wrecked on the Southampton reef. near Conception Island, 20th inst.,crew and passengers saved." 

Have managed with a great deal of help, to put his maritime / naval history to-gether from 3rd Oct. 1841 when he joined the R.N. as Boy 1st class in Barbados till his arrival in Australia 1853.

I am trying to trace his history backwards from  "Cygnet " and establish date, place  of birth, his parents etc. He may have been born 1823.

I have tracked many "Cygnets " none of which have been lost on Southampton reef.

How may I trace this "Cygnet " registration, agreements, crew lists etc. ?
